  • The Author: George Doyle Antrim (1873–1951) was a prominent business leader and local writer from Dayton, Ohio. He was well-known in the Miami Valley as a poet, humorist, and storyteller. He and his wife, Mary Crowell Antrim, were quite active in the local literary scene—Mary was even affectionately referred to as the "poet laureate of the Miami Valley." He was also close personal friends with Orville Wright.

  • The Business Connection: In 1901, Lewis E. Ellis founded The Gem City Ice Cream Company in Dayton, Ohio (manufacturers of some of the first commercial ice cream in the state). George D. Antrim joined him as a partner two years later in 1903. Antrim eventually became the Chairman of the Board.

  • This Specific Copy: This book was printed in 1950 by The Antioch Press (located nearby in Yellow Springs, Ohio). It was commissioned as a special promotional piece to celebrate the Golden Anniversary (50th Year) of the Gem City Ice Cream Company. As shown on the special tipped-in presentation page, copies of this book were sent out with the compliments of the company by its president, Herbert R. Ellis, to friends and favored customers in the Miami Valley.
