This cover is one of the most celebrated examples of early 20th-century Western trade bindings. The dark textured cloth, vibrant orange stamped lettering, and debossed mountain-and-star silhouette were designed specifically to evoke the vast New Mexico night skies where the story takes place.
-
Front Cover: The front board is a major selling point for this copy. The orange pigmentation used for the stars and title text is notorious for flaking off or wearing away completely from standard handling. On your copy, it remains exceptionally crisp, bright, and fully legible.
-
Spine: The spine shows uniform "sunning" (fading from light exposure) which has turned the cloth a lighter tan compared to the deep charcoal/grey of the front cover. This is standard shelf wear for a 112-year-old book.
-
Provenance/Markings: The interior features a clean, stylized vintage owner signature ("Mary B. Wolfram") on the front flyleaf, alongside a small pencil notation (
cy / 60) in the top right corner.
