Historical & Special Features
This book belongs to The Academy Classics series, a ubiquitous staple of American high school English classes for decades. Editors Thurber and Witham packed these volumes with massive appendix sections, vocabulary guides, historical context about the Globe Theatre, and "aids to the study of the play" to make Shakespeare accessible to teenagers.
Two things make this specific copy particularly charming:
-
The Frontispiece (Photo 3): The photo facing the title page features a striking black-and-white image of the legendary English Shakespearean actress Dame Ellen Terry (1847–1928) as Lady Macbeth. She is famously depicted pinning the crown to her head in her signature elaborately textured gown. This illustration was taken from the famous 1889 portrait painted by John Singer Sargent.
-
The School Provenance (Photo 2): Inside the front cover, there is an unblemished, stamped library tracking sheet reading: "Property of the Board of Education, Newark, Ohio." It includes blank columns for the student's name, building, condition, and loan date.
