About the Book: First published in 1903, this classic American children's novel follows the spirited, imaginative Rebecca Rowena Randall after she's sent to live with her two strict spinster aunts, Miranda and Jane, in Riverboro, Maine. It became an immediate international bestseller and laid the groundwork for the plucky-orphan genre (closely followed by Anne of Green Gables in 1908).

Interesting Fact: Author Kate Douglas Wiggin was a pioneering educator before turning to writing. In 1878, she organized the Silver Street Free Kindergarten in San Francisco, the first free kindergarten on the West Coast. She also founded the California Kindergarten Training School, devoting proceeds from her early writings directly to tuition-free early childhood schooling for underprivileged children.
