Historical & Content Background
Zane Grey (1872–1939) was a towering figure in American literature, arguably the man who shaped the mythos of the American West for the 20th century. A former dentist from Ohio, Grey pivoted to writing and penned dozens of bestsellers, including Riders of the Purple Sage. His idealized, rugged frontier landscapes, white-hat heroes, and dramatic storylines heavily influenced the golden age of Hollywood Western films.
Raiders of Spanish Peaks was first serialized in Country Gentleman magazine in 1931 before being published in book format. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Spanish Peaks in southern Colorado, the story follows the Lindsay family. Hoping the clean mountain air will cure their father's illness, they buy an old, abandoned military post—only to realize they have ridden straight into a hornets' nest of rustlers, cattle thieves, and dangerous multi-sided conflict. True to Grey's style, it features plenty of gunfights, ranch politics, and frontier romance.
This specific orange hardcover was printed by P.F. Collier & Son, a major subscription and mail-order publisher famous for creating uniform, multi-volume library sets of popular authors. Shortly before and after Grey's death in 1939, Collier produced a massive, matching set of his Western novels using this exact orange cloth design.
