About the Content
John Ruskin (1819–1900) was the preeminent art critic, social thinker, and polymath of the Victorian era. The Stones of Venice (originally published between 1851 and 1853) is his massive, three-volume architectural masterpiece.
In it, he meticulously examines the history and architecture of Venice, famously arguing that the rise and fall of the Venetian Republic was directly mirrored by the moral health of its architecture. It is the work that popularized Venetian Gothic style across the English-speaking world and heavily influenced the Arts and Crafts movement.
Understanding This Edition
Thomas Y. Crowell was famous for producing accessible, decorative "library editions" of classic authors for American homes.
