  • Title: Hell for Breakfast (Originally published in hardcover as Useless Cowboy)

  • Author: Alan LeMay

  • Cover Artist: Denver Gillen

  • Publisher: Bantam Books, New York (Bantam #134)

  • Date of This Edition: 1947

  • Significance: Author Alan LeMay is a titan of American Western fiction—he is best known for writing The Searchers and The Unforgiven, both of which became legendary films. Useless Cowboy (1944) was his comedic take on the genre, following a well-meaning but incredibly clumsy cowboy named Melody Jones who gets mistaken for a deadly gunslinger. It was adapted into a 1945 film starring Gary Cooper.

  • The Pulp Rebrand: When Bantam picked up the paperback rights in 1947, they swapped the soft title Useless Cowboy for the far more aggressive and action-oriented Hell for Breakfast to catch the eyes of commuters browsing spinner racks.

condition issues:

  • Front Cover: The colors are remarkably bright and the gloss is mostly intact. However, there is a prominent crease/lamination peel running diagonally down the upper right corner, along with standard edge scuffing and minor corner rounding.

  • Spine & Binding: The pink spine shows light color fading but the text remains readable. The binding looks reasonably square for a Bantam of this era, which were notoriously prone to brittle glue.

  • Back Cover: There is distinct water staining and foxing along the bottom edge near the Bantam rooster logo, as well as general shelf dust soiling on the white background.

Overall, it sits firmly in Good vintage condition.
