This is a fascinating piece of Western literary history. While it might look like a standard reprint at first glance due to the Grosset & Dunlap name, the specific internal plates and text layout reveal a much more significant story.
About the Book & Historical Context
-
Title: Betty Zane
-
Author: Zane Grey
-
Publisher: Grosset & Dunlap (Printed using the original plates of the Charles Francis Press)
-
Illustrator: Louis F. Grant
-
The Backstory: Betty Zane was Zane Grey's very first novel. He wrote it about his real-life ancestor, Elizabeth "Betty" Zane, a heroine of the American Revolutionary War who famously saved Fort Henry in 1782 by running a gauntlet of gunfire to fetch gunpowder.
-
The "Vanity" Connection: No major publisher would take a chance on an unknown dentist-turned-writer at the time, so Grey famously used his wife Lina's savings to self-publish the book in 1903. He hired the Charles Francis Press in New York to print a small run (estimated around 2,000 copies). Shortly afterward, Grosset & Dunlap stepped in, bought the rights (and the physical printing plates), and reissued the book.
this is a First Grosset & Dunlap Edition (circa 1913–1914).
