This book is a monumental work of American history. It won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1948 and the Bancroft Prize. It covers the peak of the Rocky Mountain fur trade (1833–1838), detailing the lives of mountain men, trappers, and Native American tribes. It is famous for featuring the vibrant, firsthand watercolors of Alfred Jacob Miller, who actually traveled west in 1837.
